Money Matters

The Study Abroad Faculty-Led Program Fee covers airfare, travel accommodations, and activities.   However, each participant must plan to bring spending money for extra costs, snacks, meals, beverages, and incidentals. Students may also want to buy a few gifts for family and friends back home. We recommend students notify their banks of travel dates.  This will ensure that debit and credit cards will work upon arrival.  Remember to ask what fees, if any, are charged to use the card while abroad.  Know the exchange rates in the destination country, as rates can change by the hour.

Tips for Money Overseas
  • Withdraw cash from ATMs in-country to reduce exchange fees.
  • Consider applying for a credit card with 'No Foreign Transaction Fees'.
  • Bring some cash - preferably crisp, new $50 or $100 bills.
  • Store extra cash in safe deposit boxes or check with hotels for safekeeping.
  • Keep a copy of your passport and your Driver’s License separate from your daily cash.
  • Download a Currency Converter app to become fluent in the exchange rate.
  • The best exchange rates are usually at ATMs or exchange banks in-country.
  • Consider using an App to track your expenses such as the Trail Wallet - Travel Budget & Expense Tracker.
