Parent Resources
Dear Parents,
The Alamo Community Colleges District has a vibrant history of Study Abroad. These off-campus immersion experiences are life changing and are typically the highlight of students' experience at college. Time overseas challenges students intellectually, culturally and socially. Often, we observe students return to San Antonio both energized and transformed with their new worldview and broader perspectives.
While Study Abroad can be an enriching experience, it can also be stressful due to the preparation required and the adjustments students will need to make. Remember that the Alamo Community Colleges District's principle value is 'Students First,' and the Office of International Programs works closely with each student to provide the tools needed for a successful experience abroad. Our summer faculty-led Study Abroad programs are a great way for students to get meaningful international experience, gain academic credit and travel with a professor from one of our five colleges.
Students receive detailed orientations prior to their departure and upon their return to San Antonio, including resources about packing, dress, climate, cultural adaptation, policies, expectations and to answer questions and provide clarity on a number of issues. It is also important to remember that we monitor the safety and security situation in each of our destination countries very closely, through daily updates from the U.S. Department of State. Students must also be aware, however, that they are responsible for avoiding unnecessary risks while studying abroad and we encourage our participants to make positive, healthy decisions.
Thank you for supporting your student's Study Abroad experience. Please check back with us soon for parents resources.
Sincerely,
Maria Rivera,
International Programs Coordinator
