While You Are Abroad

The health and safety of our students is the number one priority of the Alamo Community Colleges District.  We strive to ensure that faculty and students have the resources and information needed for a secure, rewarding study abroad experience. The Office of International Programs has specific guidelines and protocols in place to minimize the risks of international travel.

Students are taught how to stay abreast of travel warnings or potential threats in their travel area.  Students are given the tools to stay updated on the latest health issues and requirements from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The study abroad office maintains a 24-hour, seven-day emergency phone line for students traveling abroad.

Remember that Study Abroad is rewarding and fun, but that each participant is expected to serve as an Ambassador of Alamo Community College District and Texas to the World. Please learn about appropriate behavior, dress and cultural differences before you depart, and remember that you are making an important first impression overseas.

Below are some conditions and recommendations we provide to facilitate a safe and enjoyable study abroad experience.

  • Students must attend Mandatory Risk Management Orientations concerning travel health and safety abroad
  • Students are required to register with the State Department at Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updates about their travel destination
  •  The study abroad office monitors United States government advisories issued by in-country embassies and consulates as well as by the Department of State in Washington, D.C.  We ask students to stay up to date by learning about whats going on in their country by watching the daily news.
  • The study abroad office provide students an emergency plan and personal contact 24-hours a day while all participants are in country
In the event of any emergency, students will be provided an emergency plan to get in contact with their faculty and the study abroad office immediately.
